As farming moved away from the openfield farming system, serfs got the worst end of the situation. They could no longer farm in the commons area, and many were forced out of their fields by more affluent farmers. Also, most of the poor farmers could not compete with the production of those with more money and land. They could sell crops for the price of their choosing because they produced such an abundant amount. So, many of these farmers who were either forced out or could not compete with the bigger landowners went into what is called the "Cottage industry". Families would work together in this industry; women would spin yarn, and the men would weave it. Even the children could participate in this profession because of it's simplicity. These working families were encouraged to have many children because the more yarn they produced, the more money they would get. Through this process, the industrialization of Europe grew ever more rapidly.
