After reading the article by Diderot and d'alembert article on art, I have come to a conclusion. It seems that they think art goes into two categories, mechanical and liberal arts. One is art created by the mind, and the other is art created physically. I agree with this labeling of art, although I think that the separation shouldn't be exactly fifty-fifty. I personally think that art is more oriented in the physical creation of art, rather than the creation of art mentally. Right now I can't think of many examples of arts that would fall under the category of mental art. The only one I can think of would be language, and I wouldn't necessarily consider that an art. I guess knowing a language takes skill, but it isn't "art". My general definition of art is something that someone crafts with their hands. So, I guess I wouldn't even have a category for art created mentally. Anything that others may call a "mental art" like ability to do math, language, or any other knowledge I would call science.
